Dug this yesterday in a huge cornfield where there once stood an old grist mill. Any ideas? It's definitely heavy brass and apparently had an iron attachment pin in the back that rusted away. I love the pretty flower design on this but have no idea if it's a cloak pin, brooch, etc. Size wise it's about an inch and a quarter.

Perhaps a keeper for the end of the belt to pass through, like right behind the buckle??? Kind of like this one.

Like to know what BuckleBoy thinks on the time frame of this - Victorian Era or earlier?? Almost looks alittle earlier than Victorian Era..

I'm super excited about this because we have never hunted fields of any kind except yards and came up with something so ornate in a few hours of mindless no good signals in a total of about 20 or so acres I would say. I messaged Buckleboy with a link to see what he thinks.

That's the thing with fields....you can walk for hours with nothing....then one signal makes it worth it all!

The shape and motif are typical of the Hepplewhite/Sheraton era.

Neat find :)

Hey Coilygirl,

Sorry for the late reply. I've been swamped with work and not on Tnet much in the past couple weeks. What you have dug is a strap tie down from a saddle. The era is likely Federal period (late 1700s/very early 1800s).

Here is the post, with close to 400 replies. We finally figured out what this was, but it took quite a while. I like these finds. They're a good sign in any early site:
