Prisoner's Ball & Chain (Minus Chain) ?

Hi folks. I've always been fond of digging things up. Me and my new AT Pro are now ready to rock and roll. I tested out my new machine in my friend's yard the other day and uncovered a strange object that has me and my friends wondering. It's round, made of iron, about the size of a softball, weights a whopping 6 pounds and is only 3 1/2 inches in diameter. We think it may be from a ball and chain that prisoners once wore on work projects. But what would it be doing in a back yard in New Hampshire? Anyone out there that have a similar find?
