Hi All,

I see a lot of people out here that do privy digging and I myself have tried it once, but here is my question/concern about those who do the privy digging. There were a couple times when I pulled up bottles that still had the corks in them with the liquid still in it. Is there any concern about the ground being toxic, since back then, they really didn't care what they used and threw in the privy. I see that most diggers were gloves and thats good, but what about the dirt that gets on their skin? What about having a cut? Last, what about breathing in that dirt while your digging? I am glad when I dug the bottles up that I was wearing gloves. I was more concerned when I got home to clean the bottles of the stuff that was inside the bottles. They smelled really bad. Im not sure if this topic has ever been talked about before, but I am just interested on what type of precautions you take while digging privys.

Your Friend,

Steve, I make sure to wear gloves when I dig out an old privvy or trash dump.As far as the toxic goes,I put cow manure on my vegetable garden and I eat that stuff,so I really don't worry bout digging in an old privvy or dump.Don't overthink it,just dig and enjoy the finds.H.H.

I should have added,be very careful if digging a privvy. Some of them are pretty deep. When you're in the bottom of the pit looking for bottles, you ain't paying much attention to nothing else.Odl johns that have been filled in are pretty fragile around the edges.Always have somebody up on top watching for a cave-in,can't ever be too careful.Hope you have a lot of great finds to post on here.goodluck
