Is the depth indicator of the Prizm 3 worth the extra $100? I'm looking to get a new detector, and the more I look at the ACE 250, the more I start leaning towards the Whites. Any opinions on the Prizms? I'm going to take a look at the 2 and 3 tomorrow, and I just got off the phone with the dealer. He seems nice enough, but I don't want to get taken in on a bad machine by some guy that just knows how to make a sale (he did try to talk me into buying a $700 XLT, but I'm making minimum wage at the moment so that's not gonna happen :P).

I'll take any advice/insight I can get. Thank you!

I have an XLT and a Prizm IV and both seem to be dead on with the deapth.

I had a Prizm IV and have a mxt now the prizms are a very very easy to use machine and I would go with the III.

Any particular reason you'd take the III over the II?

Maybe I'm wrong here, but if I am, my excuse is that I'm new at this :)

I always thought that depth readings weren't very accurate? For example, couldn't a large and deep coin read the same as a small and shallow coin? I'm just trying to figure out if the depth meter is worth the extra $100 on a limited budget...

I just got looking at the ACE250 by Garrett. I see that a lot of people on here have it, it's got a depth meter, and it's about $100 cheaper than the Prizm 2.

Any thoughts?

I have been using garretts for over ten years, top of the line, middle and entry level. I just got the ACE 250 and it preforms better than the 500 dollar GTA 1000. I would try each machine befor buying.

I've been reading posts about the 250 for about the past half hour on here and everybody seems to be echoing your comments here... I'm glad to see that ;D

TrpnBils, from your first post it seemed to indicate that you had looked at the ACE 250 and didn't like what you saw. ?I was going to ask what you didn't like because so many others have posted positives about the 250 and I have one myself, so I was a bit puzzled and curious but held back any comment.

Myself, I like the added depth feature on the ACE 250 and since you mentioned the "limited budget" and we all understand that, I think I'd save some money yet get the depth feature by buying the 250. ?Nothing about ANY MD is perfect and sometimes the depth reading may be off a bit but it is just an "indication", not a guarantee and it is very helpful and since it is available on a cheaper MD (the ACE 250) why not give it a try?

Each MD, no matter the make or model, will . . . in the end . . . boil down to the users experience and understanding of his machine and that comes down to time in the field. ?The more you MD, the better you and your MDer will perform.

Good hunting and we will be looking forward to your posts and finds.

::)

Okay, revelation of the day: I'm an idiot...haha

Here's the deal. Back in March or so when I started getting interested in MDing again, I looked around for other detectors and bookmarked 3 on my computer. I got busy with finals/graduation/moving/new job and all that fun stuff, so I h aven't had time to MD much until this week. I got on here and started looking at the detectors that I bookmarked before.

I had the Prizm II marked, and had been looking at that earlier today. I also had the Tesoro Compadre marked, and THAT's the one I wasn't real impressed with when I looked at it again. When I made my first post, I couldn't remember which detector I didn't like, so I looked on my Favorites menu and saw the ACE page....

So, in short, I thought that's the one I didn't like. Later on tonight (after I made my original post), I started reading about the 250 on another site (all the while, not realizing that I already had it bookmarked).

Mystery solved - sorry for the confusion...lol

One more thing...

I know a lot of people on here are from PA, so maybe I can get this answered at least. Is there an effective way to block out coal on the 250? There are a ton of ~75-100 year old coal mines on my grandparents' property I wouldn't mind checking around. There's a ton of stuff just lying on top of the ground outside the entrances, and I'm curious to see if any coins have survived as the ground is generally pretty wet there.

I tried hunting that area with my current detector...that was just a huge waste of time...haha.

I think for the money, you should go with the Ace 250.? People can't say enough good things about it on this forum.? I had a Whites Prizm IV but upgraded to a Whites DFX.? I never looked at the depth reading on the prizm.? I always just dug!

The Prizm is a good detector for a beginner just like the Ace is.? But save your money and go with the Ace.

Oh, I almost forgot. Are you a Dave Matthews fan? Or does Trpnbils mean something else?

Yeah DMB? 8) Good call on that, not many people guess right on the first try...lol

Oh, and I picked up the Ace 250 today....works well so far!

I've seen the DMB twice, once in Buffalo and once at Starlake. My son is/was a fanatic. He even drove to VA beach to see him with Tim Reynolds.

Where in Western PA are you?

Well, I grew up in Kittanning but I'm living in Erie now....and looking for spots to hunt in both places...lol.

I've seen DMB 2 or 3 times now at the Post Gazette Pavillion but I couldn't bring myself to go this summer because their new album isn't exactly great in my opinion and that's all they've been playing stuff from.
