I want to get into water hunting rivers and creeks and realized I needed a good pick. After some searching I quickly realized most of the picks for sale online are cheaply made and/or way over priced. Using some scrap metal and a $10 hickory sledgehammer handle from tractor supply I made my own. I did have an extra $20- $25 for a strong magnet on the handle end. I used a scrap of 1/8 mild steel sheet, which I shaped and tempered somewhat with an acetylene torch, some old pipe, and a short piece of an automobile leaf spring. The pipe was heated and shapped to memic the handle. Then I welded the pieces together with 7018 rods. The handle was filed and sanded to fit snug and I drilled a hole thru the pick head and handle to ensure it wouldn't come loose. Shot it with some rustoleum spray paint and affixed the magnet to the handle. I will upload a short video clip of me making it to my youtube channel tonight, just search South Fork Relic Hunters. Video will be viewable tomorrow morning.
