Protecting your coil

will throwing the plastic coil cover interfere with detecting is there something else people use (homemade) i was thinking about taping it off so it doesn't get scratched so bad

Your best bet is to buy and use the coil cover that matches your detector. It doesn't interfere with detecting and preserves the life of the coil. All you need to do is periodically pull it off and empty out any find sand that has worked its way in.
