The XLT is a great detector, get it fixed, learn it and it'll treat you well. I had one and traded it in on a TDI a couple of years ago.

Remove the rechargable battery and see what the state of the square inset battery connectors is. If dirty then clean. If pitting much then its likely the pins that make contact in the machine have bent back slightly due to the battery being allowed to slip down into the case. You can either open the control box and bend them back slightly towards the hatch or get a length of say copper wire with a bit of body to it and make a loop at the end. Slide into the control box, hook each contact in turn and gently pull back towards you.
