This is all I was able to find before my machine went kaput. The toggle switch that controls the iron discrimination mode died. I was only able to hunt a shot time.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the ring that I did find is plated junk, size 7. You can see how it came out after a good soaking in ammonia. The button is cool. I think it’s a Navy or Marine button. I might have to post the button over in the “What Is It Forum”.

What brand and model metal detector do you have? Thankfully, I've not had any problems with my Tesoro. It quit working for awhile because I dropped it in a lake, but after a couple of weeks it dried out completely and started working perfectly again. Lucky for me!!! I feel your pain about the ring.

Take it to a shop, preferably the shop you bought the machine in. I have a White's that had the switch break a while back. I went back to the shop where I bought the machine, and they were able to replace the switch while I waited. Even though it was out of the Warantee period, they did not charge me for the repair.

As I understand it Gold Plated rings mean OLD as in pre 1890"s so If I was you I'd check that out

Well this is nothing new with my GB-2 by First Texas formerly Fisher. I have actually taken it to Fisher Labs in Los Banos and waited to have it fix once. And after that I have work and work on these switches over and over. If I’m not cleaning them I’m modifying them. I’m going to just have to buy a couple of micro switches and do it myself. Taxas is too far for switches.

The pictures tell it all.

The problem is with the switch components, they either foul out or the plastic throw inside the switchbox brakes. When that happens the switch box has to he opened so that the contacts can be cleaned or the throw repaired. No more of that with these switches they need to be replaced.

Oh I almost forgot contact cleaner is not conducive with the plastic the the switchboxes are made of. What happens, it cracks the plastic almost upon contact.

Looks like too much salt in your atmosphere. That's likely from detecting along coastal beaches. Maybe it's time to invest in a different machine??? GL

i see an ACE 250 in your future

Nice digs, WTG!!!
I don't mind finding cheap rings, Not as good as gold, or silver, but if you get enough of them in a display they make for good conversation pieces...
Sorry to hear about your detector, but the problem doesn't look too bad. Your local Radio Shack usually has a good assortment of micro switches available... They look to be (DPDT) Double pole, Double Throw...
Good luck on the repair, & Happy hunting~

Ant,

bummer with the problems on the machine.

Nice group of finds.

Hope your able to set everything straight and
that machine up and running.

Too bad about the machine! I work on the CCTT M1/M2 simulators here in Germany, you might know of them or have used them. HH, Mike

Thanks everyone.

That’s not salt per say, its dust particles. Electrical components act just like a negative ion generator, essentially that’s what they are. Electrical components are negatively charged and that attracts the positively charged dust particles.

Yes, dust particles hold a positive charge, and as we all know opposites attract. The dirt particles enter the switch from the toggle side of the switch, trough the toggle shaft port, down along the shaft and into the contact box. From time to time I use caned air to clean the control box out.

All I have to do is replace the switches. The only switch that’s a must is the ID mode switch. The other switch controls the mineralization mode. The way the machine is wired, when a switch goes bad the machine goes into standard mode. I can’t ID iron like this, ID’ing iron is a must with this machine, but the machine still works.

I tried the RadioShack in my area and they didn’t have anything compatible as far as size goes. These are micro switches. I found a specialty store that stocks them and I’m going to pick them up this Friday. The switch has 2 on positions and 1 off (toggle in the middle).

I could modify the switch configuration but I want it to remain stock.

PS
I'm sorry for not addressing everone personally, but I in a rush, work.
