found this on a lot today where i found a 1909 IH penny last week its 4 inches long 1 inch wide

Nice find!

It's a railroad cap badge. Not sure of the date, but it's probably early to mid 20th century. Knous's price guide lists it at $35-45, but here's a link to a similar badge that brought $94.05 in one of their auctions:
