Pushable detector?

I tend to hunt giant farm field from time to time and am always trying to think out an easier way to go about it.

I use an explorer, so the detector detects the whole center length of the coil.

So my thought was to build some kind of device to place my detector in sideways and just push it along and when a signal appears I can easily remove it and pinpoint the target.

Why am I thinking about this? Well I've gone to farm fields that have produced numerous coins in the past from old 1800s fairgrounds sites etc. that now yield the occasional good find, but they are few and far between. So It would be easier to strap on the 15" coil and just push it along until I got a signal instead of swinging it for 3 hours before I find a signal to dig (which I have done before).

Anybody ever thought about something like this or tried it before?

A lawnmower? ummmm not to belay the obvious, but aren't they METAL? And heavy (even without the motor)?

I posted the quick schematic... I'll try to figure anything out... but I'm leaning toward everyone else's opinion, that its probably a waste of time to build it. In theory, if you had a programmable detector that can adjust swing speed etc (like the dfx) you could probably run across the field pushing the thing. Or attach it to an ATV and drive it. But... you'd only be covering a 9" wide path (withthe stock coil), or maybe even and 18" path with something like an excelerator coil. Yes, swinging the coil can be tiring, but the benefits you get from the slow speed outmeasure the "quick fix" of a "two wheeler".

Its like when you go to the beach... you look left.... you look right... you look down to the water. there is no possible way you can cover it all...

I rased some of these points before when that fella wanted to make an RC detector mobile so i'm sorry if you've read some of it twice.

Here in Australia people mount HUGE coils (1m by half metre [or for you yanks 40 by 20 inches] or BIGGER by custom design) to all kinds of stuff. I have seen them mounted on quads (ATV's), pvc carts like your describing (the gold thing?) even to pvc tubes made into a 'vest' (really hard to describe). They use them to find gold nuggets out the back of bourke, salt lakes etc. They usually use minelab sd/gp detectors but I can't see why the theory wouldn't work for an explorer.

I can't see why you couldn't use the biggest coil you had mounted (sideways for a DD) on a cart and using a sunray style inline switch to switch between 'cart coil' and a normal coil for pinpointing.

Minelabs are well known for loving a low and slow approach and I would imagine this would suit them perfectly!!!
