I recently bought a Vanquish 440, and have owned an Equinox 600 since February 2018.

On my Equinox I have everything notched out below copper pennies, except for 12 and 13 to find nickels. The Vanquish 440 does not have enough discrimination segments to do the same setup. If I accept 12 and 13 on the Vanquish 440, I also have to accept 11, which is usually aluminum trash like pulltabs.

I am thinking that I might want to upgrade to a Vanquish 540 because of the increased number of discrimination segments. Is a Vanquish 540 capable of accepting 12 and 13 while also rejecting both 11 and 14?

No it lumps 11-12 and 13-14 together. You could hit nickels in any of those segments.

With the 540 for myself when I get a bounce of 12-13 that seems to be the better chance of digging a nickel. Of course there is no way of saying for sure.

Yeah, 90% of the time 12-13 is a nickel. Sometimes I get surprised when a 11-12 turns out to be a nickel instead of aluminum. I've had war nickels go as high as 16. Dug a scratchy 16 at a beat up site and pulled out a 1916 mercury dime. You just never know what's in the ground and what's affecting the tone/VDI #'s.

Don't forget war nickels because of the silver content read 14 on my 540 or on my tek t2 59 instead of 57 for a common nickel.Just dug one about 4-5 days ago

Dug a war nickel a few days ago and it was a solid 14 and on my Tek t2 was a 59 so they do read higher,,dig a 14

My Vanquish is a Nickel beast. A solid 13 - solid- thats a Nickel 99% 13 bouncing to mostly some 12 75% chance it s nickel I have yet to see 11's to 13 bounce be a nickel. 13 bpouncing 14 generaly not a nickel. As others say tho, any other metal under coil can effect reading. You never know.
