Gotta a question for you experienced MDers out there.

So far I have been digging tones that I hear going both back and forth. I have a BH pioneer 505. I am mainly looking for coins jewelry perhaps artificats in the winter when the woods weeds die out.

I have seen peps post that they dig up items when they hear a solid tone on one direction of the swing / no tone other direction. Have any of you had some good finds that way? I always thought it was perhaps trash. OH btw I am using no descrimination at all on my detecter.

Chains gold..silver..etc. Still haven't found one digging all solid back and forth signals. Perhaps areas have been cleaned out... untelling really. However, in your experience what should I be listening for if I am looking for a chain of some type?

I understand too if you don't wanna say LOL. If you are far from Kentucky then perhaps PM please?

Oh I don't know if it makes a difference, but most likely I very rarely be digging in sand. Should all be land digging for the most part.

Thanks in advance for all advice,

Good question... I've wondered this myself. In my year of limited experience, all true one-direction signals have been trash. I don't dig many of them anymore. However, I've recently paid more attention to them and found that I can sometimes separate two signals (one good, one bad) by approaching from a different direction. Found a couple of silvers this way.

Also will pinpoint to see if I get distinct separation of two targets. If not, I'll usually pass it up.

I'm a newbie with metal detecting and I discovered the one tone on the fore swing and no tone on the back swing this past weekend. I normally find something of interest when I get a tone on both swings so I will only dig when this happens. I just don't want to take up too much time on potential trash. I try to make sure by swinging the coil back and forth a few times then maybe move to another position then try again. But if I don't get that solid tone on both swings, I move on.

OK, I am not a new comer and can tell you if you don't have a repeatable signal, to forget it. However, because of the position of the target, and other variables, a good target could be missed by doing this and the time wasted most of the times could be better spent sweeping for a solid beep.

Chains don't sound off with a solid beep like a coin, if at all. Best way to tell if you BH will sound off is to lay a small chain down and sweep over it to hear if it makes a sound. Most VLF's won't and if they do, they also sound off on bird shot. How much bird shot do you wanna dig?

Good Luck,
Sandman

Thanks for the replies. So far all of my single sided tones have been trash, however now that mention a coin / interesting find beside trash I can now understand why peps find some cool finds occasionally that way. Expecially in highly hunted areas where peps have always ignored and left those signals.

This is one of those times when you gotta slap your head and say DoH! I preach test test test in my work and have done so for years. Then after sitting around wondering about chain signals and my detector and someone comes along and points out "Test it".

Thank you Sandman. I am fortunate enough to have 3 different types of chains here. I will be testing them this evening. I hadn't really thought much about frequencies as I am a new detector. But it makes sense if my detector doesn't pick em up or only gives me a tone for one swing. As for the bird shot. Agreed, around here if I was detecting that I would certainly be digging it forever during my upcoming forest hunts.

My MXT reads solid hits on chains and bird shot, this is hunting land. On the one swing hits I normally ignore them, now if the site is old and the target is deep I would have to consider digging. When you get this type of hit your detector might be at the limit of its range. You need to know your detectors depth ability. Rob

For the most part I don't dig signals that are non repeating. But,......always a but.....I approach those single chirp targets from several different angles to see if I can get them to repeat. If they won't I go on but if I can get just one little repeat signal, I will dig. Monty

I am gettting a repeated signal just from one side of the swing. Each time I say go from right to left no sound, each swing left to right BEEP. I change angles and sometimes get nothing, but occasionally still get a sound from only one side as well. Anything solid both ways I dig. But have been iffy if you should dig the ones solid from only one side.

My detector seems to only be accurate to 6". I haven't dug anything deeper than that before. A friend had a 8" target with his, I could not hear it before he dug it up.
