I am in the process of getting scuba certified and I was wondering if I will have a difficult time hearing my detector/headphones underwater. I have a Whites Surfmaster PI that only has headphones, no lights or meter to look at so I have to depend on what I hear through the headphones. What is the sound going to be like through the headphones underwater?

Sound will be a little muted while wearing a hood. I had no trouble using them. Same goes for the other detectors underwater. Some have cut a hole and glued a flap in the inside of the hood for when they aren't wearing the phones, but that isn't necessary.

Outback... I dove with my surfmaster pi from 96 until last summer. The sound is a little bit muted, but you'll still hear it fine.

The only problem I ever had was the phones wearing out... By that I mean they got loose on my head. It was fine on the beach, but when I was underwater, occasionally the current or just a quick movement underwater would knock them askew, or off my head.

I ended up getting a new set of phones ... so i figure it will be good for another 10 years or so

Spez, What kind diving do you do, Do you have any problems with the PI? I plan on diving mostly in rivers, ponds and lakes (swimming holes). I don't know if you can tell or not but I am very excited about completing my scuba certification and getting out there detecting underwater. Eventually I would like to get another underwater detector but for the time being the Surfmaster PI will have to do.

Thanks for the info Sandman and Spez. Happy hunting!

Bone phones are nice too if addaptable! not as cumbersome when your wearing a mask!

Sound travels very well underwater, and I find that I have no problem hearing at all, even have to turn down the volume -V- volume setting on the beach. The only issue that I have is that in a strong current I sometimes have my headset try to come off of my head.
A company called Westone makes custom ear molds for communication, and have developed one for diving (will allow for val salve), I have a set being made as we speak, and I should have them in a couple of weeks. This should solve my headset problem.
