Detector(s) used
Minelab X-70, Excalibur 800
Not sure about the explorer but the x70 set on 99 tones is pretty musical. I can easily hunt in all metal and hear the high tones between all the iron signals.

Many that switch from a plain detector get confused with all the "strangled duck" sounds of a Minelab, but it just takes some experience to learn the detectors sounds. Yes the X-70 has the tones, though the tone or pitch is different from the Explorer. A good set of headphones makes all the difference. Examples are the premium ones by Black Widow, Grey Ghost, Killr Bee's.

The 70, using 99 tones (actually 28) has a beautiful sound, although not exactly like the Explorer. Flute like. Not irritating like the F75 or T2. Their sounds drive me crazy.

I own both the Explorer and Xterra, the sounds on both these machines area real assett. You soon learn what tones to listen for. The Terra also has reduced tones option where you do not have the big variety of tones. You have the choice of all signals sounding the same,450hz, or 2 sounds 130hz or700hz, 3 sounds 130hz,450hz or700hz, or 4 sounds 130hz,450hz,700hz or 950hz or as they say 99 sounds ranging a variety of all sounds from130hz-950 hz Whist the Exterra is not in the same league as the Explorer for coin and relic hunting. I find the prospectors mode capabilities of the machine makes it a detector worthwhile owning . seeya Neilo :icon_sunny:

Well everybody's got their opinion, but if the 70 and the Explorer were the same price, I'd still choose the 70. And I've got both, and hundreds of hours on both.

Minelab actually rate the Exterra below the Sovereign, and the Sovereign below the Explorer. They are the manufacturers so I guess they might know their own products.Seeya Neilo :tongue3:

Yeah I could see how Minelab would think the Explorer is superior to the Xterra. If I could I'd like to sell more $1200 detectors than $700 detectors too. In my test garden my 70 hits everything my Explorer does. But for those who prefer the Explorer, more power to you. I won't have you put in the stockade. Just do it.
