Question for Lake Michigan hunters

I have been metal detecting in Lake Michigan S.W. part of the lake and find it to be highly mineralized. Every time I go my magnet in my scoop is covered with several OZs of black granulated sand. Is this the case in all or most of Lake Michigan? If so how does it affect your metal detector and if you use an Excal II what sensitivity setting would you use to compensate for it?

It all depends on how your machine is acting. Is it giving you issues when detecting? If not then I would say you're ok and keep hunting. There are areas I hunt with so much black sand that I have no choice but to switch to a PI, VLF's are useless no matter what brand in these particular spots. GL HH

Ty for the reply MrMikeJackie. What I've been doing is hunting in PI and when I get a seemingly good target I switch to discriminate and if it is actually a good target I'll continue to get a good sound if not the ground will constantly snap crackle and pop, so then I go back to PI.
