Hello, Guys...OK..I need some input from you "old" guys.
I have had detectors for a lotta years, and always went with all the bells and whistles Right now I have a 6000DI Pro su White.
I just came back from Mexico, where I have leased a property, that was barely worked by a guy, who done well, but got sick and died. He passed it on to his brother, but he was in bad health. It is now in a grandson's name, and he has no idea of how to mine anything. I have made a deal with him for 50 percent of what I find.
It's a dry placer, right on top of a small mountain; no water anywhere near. No road to the property; straight up. I guess I will find out, that it's an old river bed that is now elevated.
I'm figuring that I will play with it for a year with a detector.
Now...my big question: What do you guys think would be the best detector for coarse gold? A lotta 1/2 inch nuggets; some a little larger.
I don't need to detect anything else. Just gold. Something simple.
To what depth for 1/2 inch gold?
Will the machine work better in wet earth?
I hate to ask the old question of which detector works best, but I thought one might stand out among other ones.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
jim

The main nugget detectors are the Minelab GPX range. Expensive though.

Even tho your 6000 di pro will find you gold it's best to have a gold detector In that I would say an older White's gold detector will do you just fine or get the GMT.go to the top of the page click on the,
White's emblem and watch there gold detector video that is impressive it can see right threw an iron hatchet head and a pan of black sand to find the nugget.and it's the same price as the mxt which is the next best detector to find gold but not designated for gold, like a gold detector is.ground grab or the 1000 to 1 fine tuning for the harsh elements in the gold prospecting world. White's detector second to none.

I see a lot of guys with the Big minelab's pull a lot of gold nuggets out of the desert. Might get a used one for a fair price. But there still pricey

I would go with your 6000 Di Pro for a year. It will have no trouble finding those large nuggets.
Then after you have cashed in the nuggets and want to go deeper, I would get a Gold specific detector. If the mineralization is not bad and you are only looking for the big ones, you have it made. Frank

Jim if you are serious, then you need a good Minelab GPX 4000, or better. You should also get a good VLF detector for the small gold that is going to pay your expenses. The Tesoro Lobo SuperTRAQ, Whites GMT, Fisher Goldbug II, are the three I would choose from and grab sub-gram gold at up to 9". . Terry - Arizona Gold Adventures

Thanks for the help, Guys...I've been in working hard rock in Mexico for a number of years, and have always scoffed at the "Detector Crowd". Now, I am thinking different.
I know the Minelab is a fantastic machine, but a couple years ago, a friend loaned his to me for a couple months to use on a different property down in Mexico. I tried working with that heavy thing with battery pack around my waist, in near 100% humidity, and the temp about the same number, and I thought I was going to die. I'd rather go for something a lot lighter.
