Years ago, we had some family coming in from California. They were very loved relatives who would be driving the whole way to Arkansas to visit. Mom had been very busy cooking and had two pies made, an apple and a cherry just for them. She also made a pineapple upside down cake and some other goodies for the special occasion. We were having ham and beans, fried potatoes with garlic and onions, purple hull peas and corn bread as the main meal. We had a rough idea about when they would be pulling in so Mom had been busy all morning and day. The cake was in one of those tupperware containers to keep it fresh and the pies were covered with cloth.

Everything was nearly ready when someone drove up. Excitement filled the air until someone said, "It's Jess and Minnie!" Then fear struck my mother's face as she realized who had just shown up. Now these were an aunt and uncle, relatives too but big time moochers. They would show up at your house just about the time that you would be eating to get a free meal, very regularly. Mom was determined not to let them eat any of her hard made deserts and turned to us and yelled, "Put the pies in the dryer!" She already had the cake and was headed to the bedroom to slide it under the bed. The pies were quickly put in the dryer as Mom told us in a very stern voice, " Not a word about pies or cake!"

The aunt and uncle came in and moments later the Californians showed up. Everyone ate and then sat around the table to visit or at the couch. Finally the aunt and uncle decided that there was nothing else to be had and left. About fifteen minutes later, when it appeared to be safe, Mom got up to get one pie out of the dryer. My father's uncle watched in amazement as she opened the dryer and pulled out a pie. Then Mom explained why the pie was in the dryer and they all laughed. They never forgot that and from then on, when visiting, would check the dryer for any hidden pies.
