Rabbit Control

About 15 ago my rabbit population got out of control. After establishing 2 acres of native prairie the rabbits took advantage of the excellent cover. When I counted 17 rabbits in my backyard I knew I had to do something. They were eating everything in our yard. I had a small utility pole and built a solid perch on top of it. I erected it at the crossroads of two mowed trails in the prairie. It wasn’t long before I saw my first owl on the perch. Since then, they are an almost nightly sight. I get both Barred and Great Horned. We do get an occasional hawk landing on it but I think the house is close enough to spook them. The red headed woodpeckers love the pole but are never on the perch. We still have plenty of rabbits, but things are definitely in balance now. Accomplished with a simple perch. Here’s a Barred from last evening. Not a very good pic I’m afraid. Distance and nightfall made a difference.

That's what comes around in the fall around my backyard. I only see a few rabbits now compared to the invasion of rabbits in the spring and summer.

That was smart and actually in balance with nature.
