One way of getting the last possible use out of a small, exhausted tool was to cover it with a piece of leather, put it on a stone and hit it with another stove, fracturing it into splinters (or, as luck had it, larger pieces like these). Splinters were ready made graders ; larger ones, like these, made for naturally backed tools for scraping and cutting (one of each shown).
