Flickering torches throwing golden streaks on
stone pillars, wild rumours of hidden wealth,
and hordes of diggers looking for gold jewellery
and coins.
The rumours had started circulating on Monday
evening. Some claimed to have seen a shadowy
group moving among the ruins. When the locals
descended on the compound early Tuesday morning,
there was no trace of the treasure hunters of the
previous evening. Word spread quickly. Within the
next hour, the zamindar bari resembled a fairground.
By noon, the house was swarming with excited people.
A man suddenly rushed out shouting: Ora peyechhe,
ora peyechhe (they got something)."
