when i say buddy, just a dude that collects and i've seen a few times in the past 5 years or so.

so, he shows me some pictures of what appeared to be a first stage clovis. an immaculate one, a 20 k one .he says that he found it in some earth workings in a west Tenn. county i wont mention.....

should i pursue? only on the thought of others seeing it,..if it is correct, and real. idk what to do.

should i pursue?

I've never purchased one before but if I had the opportunity and felt great about it after seeing it in person...I would be all over it, not for $20K but you could throw $5K in cash on the table and see what happens. Obviously this is all contingent on you having no reservations about the authenticity after seeing it in person. He could have no interest in selling it or it could be fake but you have nothing to lose by at least looking into it a little more. Could you gage his interest in parting with it or if he knew the significance of his find?

There are certainly some Clovis points worth $20k+, but that would put it in a pretty rarified grouping of Clovis points. ($20k is almost entry level for some
types of nice bannerstones, birdstones, Folsoms, Cumberlands, and some Mississippian pottery, but there just aren't a lot of Clovis points that command that much.)

Really big Clovis points can certainly go for a lot more than that (Rutz Clovis, and a couple of the St Louis style Clovis points that are well pictured on Pete Bostrom's site), or well known examples (points a lot of us would recognize.) If it's under five inches it would really need to be a truly world class example, and would likely come with a pretty solid pedigree/history/pictured a couple of times.

I'm an optimist, but I'd certainly be a bit conservative before breaking out my checkbook.

A lot would depend on what you know about the guy, too. I'm just naturally suspicious when it comes to artifacts.

I've never been much of a fan of buying my artifacts but obviously your not going to obtain some without having to shell out some cash. I happen to live in northern Mississippi on the Tennessee state line by the Tn river and I have seen a few, very few Clovis points come from this area but a lot of quads redstone's and a couple other paleo points. I just so happen to have a friend who has been in the business for a very long time that if I were going to drop a chunk of cash on a point I wouldn't do it without his opinion. That being said I've seen a Cumberland come from here that would bring around 20k and my friend has sold a couple of Clovis points for 10- 15k each. I'd be very cautious and would have to know the history of the area he found it in and he'd have to agree to have it authenticated by at least three REPUTABLE authenticators and have it graded. That is just my opinion on this and opinions are a dime a dozen and worth a penny most of the time. Good luck with this and hopefully you aren't going to get burnt on it if you decide to buy

I would be careful. How big is it? Would he let you get it authenticated before you paid him? I personally know of a 6 inch Clovis that sold over 100 g last year. It has to be something special to command big money like Joshuaream said.

I agree with Tdog, I wouldn't do it either.

Lived in Stewart County for yrs. LBL area - there’s some legit collectors there but a lot of knappers who are very good & a few make decent money selling fakes and/or replicas. They even “age” the local chert with chemicals - I’ve seen my former neighbor do it. I’d be careful & definitely research the provenance for that kind of money, especially in this economy.

sorry if my wording was misleading there. i don't buy points, or artifacts or sell any i find. pursue as in try and get him to send some pictures of it to share on here. from the glimpse i saw of it on his phone, if it was real... it seems like something that would be up there on the incredible finds. i had a guy doing my septic a while back talk about a huge clovis he found in my area that has just been in a safety deposit box. i think about finds that never really see the light of day and it makes me sad. speaking of which, my brother just had an elderly guy he was helping out gift him some really cool stuff. among that is a 6 1/2 insane point that i believe is going to fall into the adena cluster. he's talking some pics of it and i'm excited to share.

20200522_075222.webp better quality to come but the mustache inclusion is super cool. It sparkles
