I dug this at a 1700's/1800's site yesterday and after a light cleaning realized it was an 1864 "small motto" and according to the charts its in extremely fine condition. This is the first semi valuable coin(not that price matters) that I've dug. Thanks for looking guys.

I remember a couple of days ago quite a few of us were commenting on how nice that coin is ! Congrat's on a rare one as well !

Matt that's a great recovery regardless of what condition anyone thinks it's in. Bottom line is that those don't come out of the ground often my friend and for a dug coin it looks awesome. My 1865 came out of the ground in great shape as well. I've often wondered what the reason is for that. Maybe someone smarter than me on here can answer that. Great job buddy

Nice one Matt!! You are on a roll. Stay at it & I know you will Bud. HH, Q.

Thanks, Quindy. You know it being a civil war period coin makes it that much more special to us!

Beauty...love that patina:thumbsup:

You took the words right out of my mouth, I was wondering the same thing - a friend and myself found 2 in the same day, both looked great, unlike the IH I found in the same spot.

It is an interesting topic. I'm sure it has to do with the metal composition and probably someone with more knowledge of coins can tell us. But I am always amazed at how the come out of the earth.

Looks great as your avatar! Congrats again.

That's the kind of find that would cause anyone's heart to jump to their throat! Great job!!!

Amazing find! Congrats.

Thanks my fellow detectorists!

Wow!! You weren't kiddin about the condition. Congrats on a spectacular find.

Thanks man. As far as condition on this particular coin. I dug one toward the end of last year that was nowhere near this condition and did have slight corrosion. Really 90 percent of this hobby is luck. Luck swinging over the target first of all and secondly the condition it may come out in. For example, I dug this 1731 KG II which is 133 years older than this coin! You just never know man.
