Rare 1930's Cast Iron Cap Gun and 44g of Sterling Silver

Dug all this stuff out of the trash today.

My favorite artifact is this 1930's "Scout" brand cast iron cap gun. It is single action and single shot - and it still works! This is the first old cast iron cap gun that I've found that is still in working order. It is 7 inches long.

Next up are these 4 sterling silver chains, combined they weigh just over 44 grams.

Some other cool artifacts:

Finally here's an item that may not look like much but I find it interesting. It's a "Kresge" brand fly swatter. Kresge was a chain of 5 & 10 cent stores that was founded in 1899 and operated until it evolved into what we now call Kmart. But now you know the rest of the story. :laughing7:

That cap gun is probably worth a pretty penny.

That cap gun is probably worth a pretty penny.

A near identical one of the same brand and year sold for $165, but it had a slightly longer barrel and was in better condition than this one. From what I read online they range between $75 and $150 depending on their quality. So I would guess mine falls somewhere into the $100 range - I think I'll keep it for now.

Freakin' jackpot from a future KMart.

I'm always amazed how easily people throw away "trash".
Lucky for you though....

That's an old cap gun, congrats

What kind of trash are you searching through?

I search dumpsters in front of houses if they look to be filled with household items, and bags in front of houses if they look like they contain stuff from a garage or attic. In general I just look for anything cool looking that people have thrown away. That's how I got my Civil War officer's sword, my WWII Nazi Merit Cross, my Imperial Chinese ivory dragon vases - and a whole host of other interesting relics.

On several occasions I've even found gold! I used to search exclusively in the trash for treasures but as of the last four or five years I've expanded to metal detecting, thrift store scrounging, and mudlarking. My favorite treasure hunting method is mudlarking now - just search the shorelines at low tide and look for treasures in the mud and sand - no detector required. I should really write a book.

Then there is dump scrounging - sometimes extremely rewarding - just look through piles of trash at a dump and see what you find. I found a bunch of silver in this manner some days ago. Like I said, I can write a book.

No! No books...then the secrets out! Shhhhhh!

Haha, maybe I'll write a tell all book but charge $500 per copy - and only release it when I can no longer treasure hunt myself - a good 60 years from now maybe. :laughing7:
