Rare Eagle V Voltigeurs Mexican War Button!

Got a good one yesterday! I found a a rare eagle V button with a lot of history behind it! The elite Regiment of Voltigeurs (hence the V) and Foot Riflemen was a one-year regiment of the United States Army raised during the Mexican-American War. It was active in 1847 and 1848 (disbanded in August) So, this Button was only in use one year by one regiment. This is the only relic I have found from the Mexican War. I also found a few more relics including a nice tootsie toy

Those buttons were used by Virginia militia after the Mexican war and during the first part of the Civil War. I traded one from a Virginia relic hunter for cash and relics. He found a bunch in a campsite of the 57th VA Inf. I had 2 ancestors in that regiment. This may sound silly, but I like to imagine one of my ancestors lost it.

Yours could have been lost by someone who served in the Voltigeurs, but also could have been lost by someone in an outfit that was using those buttons after the Mexican war. I know a lot have been found in Virginia and around Vicksburg. I have heard speculation that surplus V buttons were sold to some militia units around Vicksburg. There were also a lot of southern men in that unit, as well as in the Riflemen and Dragoons, and these buttons seem to turn up in CS camps as soldier wore old uniforms at the start of the war.

This was at a homesite in Northern NC. There have been a couple of CS buttons found on the property, could really go either way. If only it could talk!
