RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

Just got in from my second 4.5 hr session today (9hrs on my own). The :icon_sunny: was in the 90s & there was plenty to dig, as I changed tack & tried the Field next door where Shaun7 got the Gold Celtic Coin (last year). I thought I stood a chance with the recent heavy rain, & I was right the signals were pinging out everywhere. I will post the rest later, I just thought this needed its own post, as it might get lost in all the other stuff :laughing7:

Farthing of Edward III 1333-42
Mint: Berwick-on-Tweed
Type: Type 7b

Diameter: 12.5mm
Weight: 0.26g (Should be 0.25g/5 grains) :o

Obverse: +EDWAR[DVS] D·GR'
Tall bifoliate straight-sided crown, with no spearheads. "Zorro mask" eyes. Drapery has folds.

Reverse: VIL [LAB E]RV ICI
"Long Cross" with three pellets in the LAB and ICI quarters and a bear's head in the other two quarters.

Scarcity: Rare

Not only rare but it must be up there with the specimens, look at this site for general condition:
http://hammered_farthings.tripod.com/edward-iii-farthings/berwick.htm

It books (2010) at £150 in VF, but I know there are some keen farthing collectors out there  Not that it will every go on sale

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

UPDATE:

Just had a contact (PM) from a new member (never posted) who said the following:

'Hi - Really nice Edward III farthing. It's one of the better examples known - and I see a lot of medieval farthings. With coins so small, it's an amazing find.

I'm one of those specialist collectors - hammered farthings only (my website was referred to in an earlier post) and I would be interested in purchasing it, should you ever want to sell it in the future.

Regardless, could you please email me better photos/scan of the coin? I'm not 100% convinced by the obverse legend that was quoted earlier.

Congratulations on the find.

All the best,'

Thanks to that person for acknowledging a good find but when I posted the best scan I could, see below:
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,425534.0.html
& asked for their comments on the Obv type, I got a nil response.

I invite that person to make further comments on my post, so we can all learn?

I'm not sure the scan showed anymore than the pictures above. Strange to join a site to ask a question/try & buy a coin, only to then not respond :icon_scratch: Odd.

If you send me pictures on a white back ground I will record it on UKFD..if you want, might get a bit more imfo, or a comparison.

Thanks for the offer, but in the hand, I'm happy enough with my initial ID, just was interested what he thought. The Obv legend is not really in question, to my mind. However, I'm not a farthing expert, far from it, & thought there maybe more to this :-\

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

'Hi,

Many thanks for the photo. I thought the last R in the obverse legend was something different - but with the new photo it can see that you've got the legend and description spot on.

Based on other examples of this type, this would probably sell for between £200 to £285.

Definitely interesting.

All the best',

Less than a fifth the weight of a half dime. a third the weight of a 3 cent silver.

Thanks for that. I'm not familar with US coin weights. All I can say is it's;
11mm
0.26g
Not much thicker than 2 sheets of paper.

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

Wow, what a gorgious little itty-bitty coin Cru!

That guy Edward III sure is creepy looking.... :o

Just a note Crusader, because I'm such a history nerd I love reading your posts of your finds. With all your ID's of the coins you provide I immediately read up on the various kings, battles they fought, what they were known for (or not known for) etc etc.

Great stuff and thank you!

Good on you, as I'm not always guilty of the same :icon_thumright:

PS. Ed III is similar on most coins but not very accurate compared to the Roman Emperors impressions

Incase you missed it, Shaun7 got his first Celtic Gold from this field. Now called 'Shaun7 Celtic Gold Field' (or No.1 Field's Neighbour) :tongue3:

You briefly tried the No.1 field but went back to the field we were doing where you got the hammered shortcross
