RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

Just got in from my second 4.5 hr session today (9hrs on my own). The :icon_sunny: was in the 90s & there was plenty to dig, as I changed tack & tried the Field next door where Shaun7 got the Gold Celtic Coin (last year). I thought I stood a chance with the recent heavy rain, & I was right the signals were pinging out everywhere. I will post the rest later, I just thought this needed its own post, as it might get lost in all the other stuff :laughing7:

Farthing of Edward III 1333-42
Mint: Berwick-on-Tweed
Type: Type 7b

Diameter: 12.5mm
Weight: 0.26g (Should be 0.25g/5 grains) :o

Obverse: +EDWAR[DVS] D·GR'
Tall bifoliate straight-sided crown, with no spearheads. "Zorro mask" eyes. Drapery has folds.

Reverse: VIL [LAB E]RV ICI
"Long Cross" with three pellets in the LAB and ICI quarters and a bear's head in the other two quarters.

Scarcity: Rare

Not only rare but it must be up there with the specimens, look at this site for general condition:
http://hammered_farthings.tripod.com/edward-iii-farthings/berwick.htm

It books (2010) at £150 in VF, but I know there are some keen farthing collectors out there  Not that it will every go on sale

A great little coin Cru, you did good on the not gold field.
You think, I'm going to kill Shaun7 :laughing9:

Incase you missed it, Shaun7 got his first Celtic Gold from this field. Now called 'Shaun7 Celtic Gold Field' (or No.1 Field's Neighbour) :tongue3:

You briefly tried the No.1 field but went back to the field we were doing where you got the hammered shortcross
You mean then the field across the tracks...? That was a good but HARD field.

Nearly right, that one has been our No.1 Field, two years running, see this years above (same again last year + 10% including some nice rare artefacts) :icon_thumright:
However, this coin came from its neighbour further up the track towards his house.

I was just thinking about that today, and that feeling when I realized what it was ;D :icon_thumleft:

Yeap, Dad & I were dancing & making strange noises when I realised it wasn't a gold button, it caused one of the farmers to come to his garden fence :hello:

Well I thought that field would be good, but at that time it was so hard, it took 5 minutes just to dig something out that was 4" deep. But so good, gads! and GADS. There sure was a lot coming off that field. Can't remember what I found on that field, have to look it up again. Great finds!

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

At a 1/3rd the weight of an American "3 Cent", that's a TINY coin....I didn't realize how tiny until you showed the photo of it lying on an American Penny. In all probity, a SWEET and terrific Find! :occasion14:

Yeah, those 7-8mm late 4th C Roman coins are the smallest, but the same kind of weight as the hammered above. Found quite a few of these, but thats the power of the XP
