Last year I bought a bag of V nickels for a few bucks on Ebay, just wanting something to place under the coil and listen to. They were all just in good condition. After putting a few on the ground and playing around I put them away. A week later I was looking at them again and realized that I might of had a key date. I ended up having a 1912. I only paid about a dollar for it. It is worth about $250 in good condition.
About the same time, I bought a complete collection of V nickels and paid about $400 for it. I had someone give me a rough estimate and it was almost $2,000 in coins.
