Our Best Day in maybe 10 years 🫣😃

We went out not expecting much like always… starting the day 3 blocks from my house, an area that probably dates from the 20-30 at the most.. we started hunting a couple of cleared lots where they are building houses… Started off normally enough, a few modern coins, and a wheat penny…. As I’m walking around my partner calls out… hey what’s this ? It’s junk right? And he handed me this cruddy disc… he said he almost threw it at me jokingly because he thought it was junk…. He thought it was a punch out from a utility box… Turns out it was a LARGE CENT, you can’t see a date, but it’s pre 1856 type. No other old coins or relics were found so we don’t know why it was there…
Later we hit an old church that I had hunted years ago and I knew there wouldn’t be much… in 45 minutes only two coins. He got a penny and a Buffalo 🦬 nickel… I got nothing….. then We moved on trying a few empty lots, I got a few wheats, and pennies.. nothing…. Trying a different lot, my partner popped a 1937 Bank Token (no picture) and I got some dimes and quarters but nothing old. Then we decided to try a house we had seen that was boarded up… clearly old and a big yard, boardering on a main road.
This turned out to be the better bonanza…
Within minutes we had popped several wheat pennies and it felt like it was going to be good. As we are walking around an older guy and his wife drove through the yard on a golf cart… laughing and talking to us… saying that they had yard sales here and we would sure find money and nobody cared if we walked around there.. seemed like a nice guy and my partner said he was sure the guy was smoking pot 😂 as he was talking to my partner I kept walking around… and popped a buffalo nickel just feet away from them talking… finally they left and we continued hunting… 15 minutes later my friend got a high signal that I checked… I thought maybe a quarter…. But what he turned up was a 1944 Mercury Dime… 😳 So we kept hunting… and a few minutes later I got a token and a buffalo 🦬 nickel and we both hit double wheat penny holes…
Then I got a really nasty signal that was jumping around and cracking.. like iron … but the machine just wasn’t sure (my DEUS II) so I started digging to see what was causing the signal and… suddenly I see a small round silver… turns out it was a 1939 Mercury Dime … this place is producing a lot of good stuff… We kept hunting but it was getting on towards 5 pm and I knew I had to get back home… my partner left to change batteries 🪫 in his pinpointer, and he was at my car.. on the other side of the big yard…. Then I got a Nickel signal deep… I’m thinking not again? But it was in fact a third buffalo 🦬.. then I swung my machine near that target and got a target reading high like maybe a silver dime… although many times these turn out to be clad dimes or quarters…
But as I dug the plug and tracked with the pinpointer, suddenly I could see a big silver disc…. And I almost shit a brick…
I picked it up and walked to my car to show my partner… before I even cleaned the dirt off… but I could see the design was clearly older… 🫣😳 after taking some pictures I washed it off in a puddle of water and staring back at us was a 1905 Barber Quarter… beautiful condition…. I was beside myself…
So besides the regular pocket change we got for the day…

3. 2 Mercury Dimes
4. 1 Barber Quarter
5. 2 old Tokens
6. An early foreign coin
7. Maybe 10-12 wheat pennies
8. A silver faced pendant of a cherab?
(Did not know what this was until I got home and cleaned it with a toothbrush)

UPDATE: That Barber Quarter is an S mint mark … making it extremely rare for the East Coast… yippee 🥳

Outstanding day a field. About time nowf or.............another such one!

I actually wanted to follow up this week with an update… just to show how much pure luck has to do with success…

So me and my partner went back to the same house we were at last week… the one we got 2 mercury dimes and barber quarter and 12 wheats from and we spent 3 hours combing through the whole yard, even went to the yard next door… (a church parsonage) and we got a total of 3 wheats and NOTHING else old… now you might think… maybe you got all the good signals… but apparently not… I got 1 nickel, 2 quarters, 14 dimes and 25 pennies… all on good solid high target signals… all could have been silver… plus a few trash targets that sounded incredible but were big nothing burgers …
So…. Were we lucky enough to walk over almost ALL the old targets that first time? Leaving just the clad for this time (and obviously we didn’t get all the good targets)
With roughly 45 good targets (me, not including my partner, maybe another 15 targets) how is this possible ?
I’ll let you guys figure it out 🤣
