Recent purchase - I couldn't help myself

I hope you enjoy these "rock shop finds".

On my way back from up North I stopped by my favorite rock shop and I could not help but acquire this collection. I admit I had mixed feelings about purchasing. I am on the same page as most everybody here, I would rather find my own artifacts. Given my searches have not yielded much though I wanted something to get me through the winter. This gives me something to study and learn from, while I can marvel at the skill that went in to making these. For what it is worth, I have not given up the search.

They had 4 frames like this for sale each with different tools. It was a very hard decision on which one to get. The collections were all labeled: "Archaic" points, Tennessee. I know and trust the owner of the shop but unfortunately he was not there so I was not able to pick his brain on what else he knows about these collections. I feel that these were very fairly priced and fell well in to the category of much less than I would ever sell them for had I found them.

I have some re-arranging to do in the frame as some of the pieces have shifted around. As it will be a delicate task I am saving that task for when I really feel up to it. I will probably photograph some individuals when I do that. If there are any you would like a better view of do let me know.

Thanks for looking.

Nothing wrong with buying. I can't usually do that because they are too expensive...

There is not a thing wrong with buying and what you have posted I don't see anything that just yells reproduction. That is a fine frame of artifacts:thumbsup:

AAA buy! Awesome Arrow Artifacts!

Every one of those are nice. I really like the drills.

With the amount of people reproducing artifacts as a hobby as well as doing repairs broken pieces, I would never buy anything without provenance.

The shop seller saying he is unsure of their origin speaks volumes.

The shop seller had some detail, but it is the owner of the store who manages the inventory and would know the specific details. I know and trust the owner, he just was not working that day. The shop seller offered to call the owner but I did not want to make him work on his day off. I figured I can pick his brain when he is back in town. Given the amount of inventory at this store and the vast collection of artifacts, fossils, stones from around the world, it does not surprise me that the seller only had some general information.

I certainly do appreciate your words of caution. I may have made a leap you would not have made but if you knew the owner like I do you might understand why I was comfortable with the purchase.

They look great. Nothing wrong with buying if it makes you happy. How you learn and how you grow.

The drills would be nice to see better pics of when you get into it!

Wow…Anyone of those would be a stellar find…that one in the bottom right corner looks awesome…is that a Guntersville in the center laying next to a drill pointing down?

Cant see anything wrong with those. Can you give a price range on the purchase? Just comparing on what pieces are selling for now.

It averaged just under $7.70 per piece for the set and the frame before tax.

Here is a better close up of that one. It does resemble one of the examples on projectilepoints.net. If so this would be one of the newer pieces in the set.

Well if the one on the right 2nd row bottom is a Beaver Lake you probably made your money back. Heck the drills will run 20-35 easy a piece.

One sure has the Beaver Lake shape but I wasn't sure if it could be too small. It is 1.5" long and 5/8" wide.

Hmmm. Some of the new pics make them look a little fresh.

I mean no offense here and am just offering an opinion (keep in mind I've never bought or sold a point in my life) but to me about half of them look like good points and the other half I'm not quite sure on. I'm not an expert but certainly the point at 9 o'clock and the drill at 12 o'clock are types I haven't seen out of Tennessee. The Snyderish point at center is another one that doesn't look right. 3 of the 4 corner points make me nervous, as does the bottom drill and the point just below and left of the quarter. The Dalton / greenbriar and the Beaver lake both could be good but in this frame I'd question them and want to have them checked out. I hope they're all real and I wrong.
