Rectangle Sterling chunk. Belt buckle?

I found this piece of sterling silver yesterday and am trying to figure out what it's a part of. It appears that something is missing off the back side along the long edges. Maybe it wrapped around an was part of a belt buckle? The front side has I.A.R. etched into it in a somewhat crude manor. Custom initials? Company name? Has anyone get a good way to research that patent date? All the ones I've tried either have too many hits to even think of going through them all, or "no results". Thanks for your time.

This buckle does have the right patent date, but I don’t think it’s the right one. This looks to be the type the army dress belts use, which differ from yours in a few ways:

I think it was a buckle for a chastity belt and nhbenz found it.

If course, mine has been bent a bit, but, overall I would say it's slightly curved, so that would probably eliminate a match safe. The edges of mine are beveled and have fairly sharp 90 degree corners. The belt buckles I see posted here so far just don't have the correct shape.

Let's see as I add this up.......amortize the cost of the detector, pin pointer, digging tools, pouch, gas to get there, the share of wear and tear on the truck, my boots, and clothing, etc, etc, cost of hiring someone to do the jobs I should be doing instead of detecting,..........vs.........the $6.40 in change I found, the crusty token, a small silver charm, the 1953D wheat cent, a broken copper belt buckle, and the pound and a half of aluminum scrap.......oh yeah, it's ALL free! Just ask some of our politicians to do the math!

Again... IMO... open opposed face (3 openings) match box holder someone sawed... NOTE saw marks.

But really... ?

Not a buckle IMO for there is no reminisce of a hook / pin that would have held belt in position ... and the edges appear too sharp for a buckle.

I'm not seeing any saw marks myself, and it would seem odd for them to put the stampings on the underside of the top of a match box holder where nobody would see them.
