Reeded edges......NICE TO KNOW FACTS

Does anyone have background data on the Reeded edges of our dimes quarters halves. As to number of grooves, same quantity of grooves between the dime Qtr & half, current coins vs older varieties., the reason for reeded edges (cents & nickels don't have them)., U S coin vs Canadian coins that are produced., similar grooves?
Just a question that comes to mind. Comments with facts please!
