Found near the site of a fort from the mid 1800's. I believe it's brass, approx 3"x2". No obvious markings. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Rein terret? Some other horse harness part?

WELCOME to the forum. Yes, they look like rein terret hooks to me too. Nice find, Breezie

Thanks for the welcome breezie. This forum is a great resource...especially for a newb like myself!

I can't find any pics online of rein terrets with the figure 8 looking pieces on the top.

I'll see what I can find when I get a break from this shop. Breezie

Dr.M, I've looked, but like you, can't find any like yours. Maybe you could contact a website that features antique horse tack. Nice find, Breezie

Thanks for looking Breezie! I have searched the internet up and down. Maybe I'm way off base. I'll contact a specialty site and see if I can get some answers. Thanks again !

It has the right 'look' but I'm not sure that's what it is. I've found quite a variety of rein terrets and all have larger openings than what yours looks to have. In most of mine, a 50 cent piece would fit easily into the opening and it looks like yours might not fit the quarter.

Maybe a brush ...minus handle and bristles.

I agree it does seem small compared to the terrets I've seen online. I also thought it might be a fly terret missing the swinger or something else ornamental but nothing I've seen has the big figure 8 pieces.

It does look like a terret.

My problem with the item is that - the way it is made, would be detrimental to leather. (and I'm only judging by what it looks like in the picture, it could be different than what it looks).

Most terrets I've seen, and the 2 or 3 hundred that I have, are all smooth on the inside.

I think it used to be relatively smooth on the inside. Have you seen terrets with slots through the top of the "ring" as shown in my first picture? If so do you know the purpose of that slot? Hmmmm.

That's my issue with the terret also. The slotted top is something I've never seen on a terret. And all of the terrets I can recall seeing were threaded at the base. If anyone has a sample of one that attaches like this, I'd love to see it. At first I thought it looked a bit like an oarlock, but it's much too small. Thinking... thinking...

I agree with DirtDigger,

I spent some time looking at some of my horse stuff, and none have that split at the top.

I just lean towards it being a finial from something.
