Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

Hello, went to the local park and got a couple nice surprises....

A wheat
A compact (0-2 coin-wise)
Cool key 8)
1.26 in clad

And a rejection letter for a school park (never ask unless you need to!)

Dear Justin:

I am writing this letter in response to your request to use a metal
detector on blankety blank's property.

I must deny your request as it poses many problems; the least of which
is that we have many students who use the playground area - as well as
other areas for play, or running, or practices and/or physical education
activities.

The District spends a lot of time and money trying to make sure that
the ground is taken care of. Therefore, we do not want anyone "digging"
up the grass and/or dirt which could result in an injury and/or cause us
more work.

Good luck in your treasure hunting

A nice way of saying we don't want holes in our lawn...which is basically a swamp...the snow plow can do more damage in a winter than i can ever do there...everyone was fine, even the teachers until this one "just wanted to make sure". She was nice and just wanted permission...you can go there and not find any holes....oh well :'(

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

Just a thought from a greenie, Remember the code of ethics. Here are the first two that I live by.

CODE OF ETHICS

I WILL ALWAYS CHECK FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY AND LOCAL LAWS BEFORE SEARCHING. IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO “ KNOW THE LAW “

I WILL RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY AND WILL NOT ENTER PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT THE OWNER’S PERMISSION. WHERE POSSIBLE, SUCH PERMISSION WILL BE IN WRITING
. :)

Just my 2 cents,
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

I am pretty new at MD'ing and am confused by why people are so concerned
about damage to propety from MD'ers. I guess I am using the wrong tools.
I do not have a plow, crane or back hoe. What equpiment is it that some MD'rs are
using that makes such a mess? Last time I went out all I actually used was a spoon!!
How does one pinpoint their coins when using a back hoe?

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

I have a 99% turn down rate from letters.
(Usually they just get Ignored)

and a 99% Permission granted rate on face to face requests.

But I still write letters when there is no alternative.

It's not what there using but what they are leaving behind? And that's holes, holes not filled back in, or not leaving it like the way they found it. I'm new to this site but I've been MDing sense 1972 and learning to be neat with your holes is an has been my way.
As far writing letters, I don't do that. The best way for someone in my perspective is to be up front, introduce yourself, if your not granted leave them a card. What mean there is I have business cards that I made up for locating rings and such, and I'd say within the week if not the same day they will call you to tell you they know of a family member that has lost something and would you be interested in finding it for them. You can't imagine how many times that I was granted permission to search there lawns, this works believe me. ;)

Thanks,
Mike

jeffro,
do you use a flat-head or philips? and how long is the screwdriver?
you must be an expert at pinpointing, right?

A flathead. The biggest, longest one you can find. Mine's probably 9 or 10 inches long, with the handle.

I think some machines are better than others at pinpointing, it definately ain't me, LOL! I have a Fisher cz5 with a spider coil, and yes, it's excellent at pinpointing.

A trick that I learned for pinpointing- when you're sweeping back and forth across the signal, keep the detector in motion and press and hold the pinpoint button JUST BEFORE you expect another beep. For some reason, this shortens the pinpoint signal, making it crisper and clearer and shorter. Pretty easy to pinpoint with. I don't know if it works on other models, however. Try it and see. :)

how do you dig a coin with just a screwdriver???

I have just started using the tip of my Lesche digger, I know it can scratch the coins but I have found over 1500 coins this year and only 3 have been silver so I take my chances! I will only probe in this way if the signal is less than 1.5 inches. As far as a screwdriver mine is about 8 inches long with a dulled head. You can actually feel the solid coin tap on it, move back a little and pop it straight up! it is a ton faster for me especially on the shallow coins. I have tapped and popped rocks by mistake, but much faster then making holes. This type of probing for coins is especially useful if you are on a well manicured grass area and people are watching.

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

Being new I just stick to "The Code" Ask permission..

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

I have researched the policy where I live and was unable to find anything in regards to MDing. I also wrote/emailed the city clerk since they were the contact on the city regulations. No response, does this mean they don't care or writing a law to ban MDing in public parks. The only one I have not asked is the city police, they will know won't they. Other wise how can they give me a ticket if they do not know if it is the law or not.

Am sending the following city law for Manassas, VA:

Sec. 78-80. Hunting for relics on public property.
It shall be unlawful for any person, without authority of the city council, to hunt, search out for, attempt to find or seek relics, or to use or be in possession of a metal detector on public grounds or property.
(Code 1978, § 21-37.1)
Cross references: Streets, sidewalks and other public places, ch. 102.
State law references: Acquisition and housing of relics, Code of Virginia, § 15.2-945.

I got bounced off of a public park soccer field that was a ruddy mess after a hard fought soccer game..............ohhhhhhhhhh but I could have potentially caused damage to the field. When I tried to explain that sometimes I find things on the surface and no digging is required, the answer was a repeated but stronger "NO". The mere possession of a metal detector is prohibited....and a crime.

It seems that a lot of times it is easier to say "no you can't do it" and live in total ignorance than to try to understand something.

It's a shame.
Just my 2 cents.

Sometimes even the city/county police are not that well informed on city ordinances regarding metal detecting....unless they have had prior problems. Speaking as a former law enforcement officer, even I wasn't up to speed on the metal detecting ordinance. And....sometimes, the cities will take the easy way out and hook onto a state law. I checked your profile and saw your location as OK, but your map area looks to be outside of the Amarillo/Canyon City, TX area. Usually I will Google "city ordinances" for a specific area and then do a search for "metal detector". I don't know how other detectorists do it, but this is how I do it. I hear what you are saying....you seem to have done what is expected. Anybody else out there have any advice? Like I said, I know it is easier for them to say NO than to say YES.

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

Parks dept. is where I go for permission where I live. State parks and such, check the FMDAC website. National Forest or BLM, check their websites or with the district ranger. National historic parks, don't even bother, they're off limits.

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

I never ask for permission on public property. I ALWAYS get permission to hunt on private propery. I have two strategies for when someone hassles me. First I always carry a 5 gallon bucket of junk that I've dug and I keep it at least half full at all times. Secondly I take pride in leaving no trace that I have dug. If the ground is dry I don't dig in the grass because the plugs don't go back nicely. When someone comes up and says I shouldn't be digging up the park I say "I've just dug 50 holes in this park, show me where I have done any damage." They can't because I can't even tell where I've dug. Works every time.

I live in Norman, do not know why the map area showed Texas. Anyway I went to a park yesterday right in front of the Parks and Recreations HQ for the city. Employees out cleaning up after a local event, nobody said anything just looked at me as they drove by in there golf carts. I think I will stop in next time when they are not so busy working......

Re: Rejection letter #1 and today's finds

Ahhh...Norman, OK....I'm originally from Enid and now live in Manassas, VA. Haven't been through Norman in quite awhile, but I think there was a metal detector store in Norman called Wayne's. Just a thought....they might be able to provide some experienced guidance on the law/ordinance. But, as far as I am concerned, you are definitely on the right track by also checking with the park authorities. I know some are saying "public" is public.....but as a former law enforcement officer, I would much rather check than run the risk of having to go pay a ticket. In the short time that I have been MD'ng, I have received a huge amount of fun from this hobby. I'd rather not run the risk of explaining to my wife that the authorities confiscated my metal detector because I didn't check the ordinances/laws.... ;D Good Luck. I am hoping to get back to OK this summer or fall.
