Relic Hunt Yields Interesting piece of an Item

I went out in the cold to dig a little and found this interesting item. I'm thinking a part from an old firearm or perhaps a lock cover plate?

Any help in the identification of this item would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I have been studying the piece and it appears to be Labelled GR with no M as thought before.

It is a keyhole drop or cover for a British padlock, as stated. Just above the broken spot is where it pivoted left and right to cover and expose the keyway.
