Remington - Tiffany & Co medal

Token says H.E. Sage Oneonta NY. Good for one pint of milk. The medal says National letter writing contest school children of America Awarded by Remington arms union metallic cartridge co 1913 and is stamped Tiffany and co. Any info on the token or the medal would be great thanks.

Re: Remington - Tiffany & Co medal

Sscindercoop, The medal may be an award given to kids writing letters to soldiers in WW1. Are those rifle cartridges and harts around the edge? and with the Tiffany mark to boot nice find.
Broken Knee

OOP's let me correct my self WW1 started in 1914 not 1913

Thanks, It could be but April 6, 1917 is when the US declared war, but their armed forces were not fully engaged in France till the spring offensive of 1918. :dontknow:

I did find a "A. C. Sage" who, in 1888 had 16 cows on his farm in Oneonta and would sell cow's milk to the local butter company. Maybe the father of your guy.

Re: Remington - Tiffany & Co medal

Tiffany has a long history and did some pretty impressive carvings on firearms in its day. That is a very fine award there if done by them. That is the kind of item I like seeing on the banner. Be nice to learn more about it.

That's interesting Don :icon_thumleft: I found a Harvey E. Sage in the 1870 and 1880 census records for Oneonta - he is listed as a farmer. He was born in ~1825. He is living with his wife Laura and son Austin. I wonder if Austin is "A.C. Sage"?

Re: Remington - Tiffany & Co medal

I found a few contemporary newspaper articles about the writing award.

3/10/1913 North Dakota Evening Times article -

10/10/1913 Waterville Times ( NY )

Amsterdam (NY) Evening Recorder 12/15/1913 - it has a drawing of the medal :icon_thumleft: There is a long article with this - let me know if you want it. Note it says there were 1,000 medals.
