Hello! I have wanted a metal detector for as long as I can remember. In fact, as a little kid I got one of the orange and black cheapo's from Radio Shack for Christmas one year. Anyway, I've been putting off digging into this hobby long enough and would love to just get started. I'm doing research myself and while I like the nitty-gritty details, my free time is limited and I'd rather learn through "on the hobby" training. My general philosophy on things is to buy good quality from the get-go rather than to keep stepping up to better gear so I'm okay with buying gear to grow into. With that said...here's what I'm looking for...
Primary interests:
-Gold prospecting
-Coin/jewelry hunting
--->I'm not a history buff, therefore relics aren't very interesting to me
Locations:
-We live in Colorado.
-We like to camp, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, but have lots more exploring to do throughout the country.
--->Therefore, we'd like something that would work well here and also on the beach (typically WA/OR beaches, but I'm sure we'll get to others as well). I'm not really planning anything requiring waders, but to the water line and maybe into shallow water (salt and fresh). Is this realistic?
As I'm reading and contemplating about single versus dual frequency machines, concentric versus DD coils, etc. I realize that this hobby would probably be more fun if my husband and I each had our own detectors rather than having to share. SO, if there is a two-detector combo where each detector is a reasonably good all-around machine for our primary interests, but in combination the two detectors help us search a wider variety of areas (e.g. wet sand versus Coloardo soil), I'd love to hear about it...
We went to a local shop here which was surprisingly crowded (at least relative to my expectations). We had some time to talk to the owner about options, but we hadn't refined what we were interested in searching, so we came away with some preliminary suggestions of what we may like, but agreed we needed to do some research and go back to discuss further. As a point of reference, here are those units (in no particular order):
Teknetics T2
White's Spectra VX3
White's MXT Pro
White's DXF 300
I was impressed with the local shop and would like to offer my business to a local, small business. However, I do nearly all of my shopping online and while doing research/reading reviews I've noted a pretty significant savings online. So, I have to figure out what's more important to me - the local support or a better price.
Any recommendations? If there is more info that would be useful, let me know.
Thanks!
