Hello from Somerset. I have been trying to find people in the area who like hunting but haven't met any yet.
I have been trying to research the civil war era hot spots in Pulaski county. Some are obvious(Mill Springs) and others have been elusive. Camp Wolford and Camp Clio were in the area, yet little more than a mention in what I've read so far. Also, I would love to hook up and hunt with others in the area.
Any information or points in the right research direction would be greatly appreciated*****
: Wolford was a Union 3rd Ky. vol. infantry camp 8 m south of Somerset near Burnside.
: Clio was also Union but was a training camp for the 12th Ky.infantry in the area of Bronston.

Hi Dutchman,

I am in north central KY. You can go online to the library of congress map site. Not only do they have detailed battle maps for Somerset/Big Springs but they also have camp maps from old military diaries. I have been researching the Mumfordsville battle field in Hart county. Getting permission to search is kinda tough as these folks don't take to outsiders.

If your talking about Mills Springs Kentucky most of the old town (I think it might have been named Liberty is under the Cumberland lake. You might find relics washed out on the shore but watch out for the copperheads. The other side of the lake (I think that is called Russell or Russell Springs?) is or was much better hunting. But they were all over that area. It used to be quite easy to find things especially bullets along the shores with just your eyeball. I haven't been in that area for decades. Beautiful area up there. If you live in the area I'd sure start doing some good research in the county records. Heck I'd love to come up there and hunt with you in the fall.
There were actually two different battle at Mumfordsville and it sure was hard to get permission to hunt anywhere up there. Mumfordsville has been hunted pretty good for a long time but they also camped on the other side of the river (Green River I think it is called) Stuff used to be found on either side. Remember most of the detector folks always look in the most obvious areas and only a small portion of detector folks did research or got very far away from the star fort. (I still can't imagine that small pit being a major fort. I didn't look like you could fit 10 soldiers in it and have any room to move.
