Resinol is a skin ointment that was developed in the 1880s by Dr Merville Carter in Baltimore, Maryland. He founded the Resinol Chemical Company in partnership with his brother in 1895 to mass produce and market the product. The company also made other popular products including soap, but that was more important later, in the 1900s. Given the context where this was found, I'm confident it was the ointment. Resinol ointment was a general skin treatment for skin irritations including chapped lips and skin, sunburn, cuts and scrapes, and even poison ivy.
Here's a later advertisement from 1912 (click to enlarge).
The ad mentions that it is patented and trademarked. The patent was made in November of 1895, but I was unable to find the original patent, just a mention in the Patent Office newsletter.
Resinol ointment is still made and sold to this day, though these days it comes in plastic tubes instead of glass jars.
I didn't get a before shot of this one, but it was in pretty good shape so didn't really change much with cleanup.
Finally, here's an interesting side note. Dr. Carter's cousin, Henry S. Dulaney, was one of the partners in the Resinol Chemical Company. He was also apparently an officer or director in the American Finance Company, which offered investment in a sugar plantation in 1900 with a guaranteed income of $125 a month (almost $4800 in 2025 dollars).
