Here are some before and after pics of a butt plate from an 1841 musket (as best as I can determine). I dug it recently on a WBTS battlefield (on private property) here in the Valley. As you can see, 150 years in the dirt has not been kind to it. The after pics are the result of over 20 hours of electrolysis and lots of elbow grease combined with various wire brushes and a Dremel. I then put 2 coats of Briwax on it to seal it. I think the finished product is quite beautiful. (Yeah, I know - I'm weird.) I'll feature more information about this relic, as well as my other recent finds in two upcoming videos.

Thanks Getty! This was my first completed electrolysis project. I was quite pleased with the way it turned out.

Great job on the resto. You can display it proudly now.
Your soil must be pretty bad there. I have two of the butt plates from here in NC and
the soil didn't attack the metal as bad.
Awesome find.
Congrats,
MM

Great job there Stonewall, turned out really nice!! I usually wait til the cold winter come's around clean all mine up

You did a great job restoring the plate.
Congrats

Thanks everybody. I hope to be able to get back and see if there's any more of that musket in the ground.

You done a great job on that

Thanks JB. Took the T2SE out again for a bit yesterday. I was ready to burn it at the stake and pull out the trusty MXT Pro, but I stuck with it. Finally started to get the hang of though I've still got a long way to go. The T2 likes to lie about iron nails, just like the MXT. My settings were 90 on sens., 25 disc., and 2+. Tried all metal for a while, but don't think I'm ready for that yet. Any thoughts?

(I did find a 1939 Merc though!)

If you whip the T2 back and forth as fast as you can..I mean fast like your hitting a home run it will sound off as iron..

The faster you swing a T2 the more accurate the tone will be..

It takes a while and occasionally i dig one but not near as many nas i used to :icon_thumleft:

21 disc will cut out the nails if i have to use disc it is 16 or 21..But 99% of the time i use 0 disc.

That's very helpful JB. Do you ever hunt in all metal mode?

Looks great! Nice relic and preservation job!
