That's a lotta coppers. Are you keeping those or returning them?

Oh yeah, I'm keepin' em.... actually, I am keeping all of them so far (about $500 worth). I may eventually turn them in, but base metals have been climbing a lot lately. Nickel is up to over $22.00 per pound.

Lejeuene, with copper's friday closing price of $3.02 a pre '82(and some '82 as well) cent is worth $.02,or twice face value.

last year copper reached $4.50/pound,old cent's were worth more at that time and you could legally melt them.

Scrap copper will go higher than even that soon and most of it will go to the scrap hungry country of China.

Some of it will make it's way back to the U.S. in the form of low quality castings and machined products such as faucets, valves, pipes, fittings and so on.

On a side note nickel is extremely high right now and at friday's price of $22.34/pound,a 5 cent piece(nickel) is worth $.087-getting close to the twice face value status of the pre '82 cent.

Who will be the first to start hoarding 5 cent pieces?A dime is still worth ONLY a little more than 2 cents and a modern half dollar a little over 11 cents for scrap.

now if a person was to start "hoarding" nickles, what years would he or she be looking to hoard?

That is the nice thing about nickels, you can save them all (except for the War Nickels) they all have the same composition. Some date have more numismatic value 39-D 50-D etc..
