Retiring my Whites XLT. What's the best out there for $1000 or so?

Minelab Equinox 800; 600

I loved my XLT. I moved up and down the food chain of detectors. I've used the latest greatest all the way down to the basic. For the Jersey Pine barrens I use the Fisher F-75. Most sites I detect are at least 200-300 years old so I'm usually in iron. F-75 is simple and reliable. I use all metal and 2-tone most of the time. It's also a well priced detector.

For under a $1,000 I’d go with a Minelab Equinox 800. Best all arounder out there right now. You don’t necessarily have to go with the 800, but I found that having the 600 I kept wondering if I was missing anything even if people were telling me I wasn’t.

You'd be missing several things getting the 600. The question is, do you need these things in the type of hunting you're doing.

World traveling, looking for just about everything. No prospecting, and I will have a dedicated underwater detector.

I'd get (and I did!) the Equinox 800. It will have the most adjustability for whatever conditions that you will encounter on your travels. It's also one of the lightest detectors out there and will break down to fit in a suitcase.

If you have a dedicated underwater detector then I’d suggest a look at the XP Deus. Especially traveling. Good luck!
