Well my hunting partner and I went yesterday back into the site that Friday produced my capped bust half dime. We busted our butts for 6 hours...at least my buddy got a minie, I got SKUNKED! I went back in this morning for a short 3 hour hunt and got 3 minies and a 1838 Large Cent that has been stamped "G.W.J."...I looked for it in my token book but could find no info on it. I would appreciate any info anybody has. HH everybody!

Don't think this would be in a token book anyway. It's a counterstamped Large Cent. Not sure what the G.W.J. stands for (or stood for), but it may have a modest value for someone who collects that. And, of course, it's a nice keepsake for you.

sweet LC!! love to see them large brown disc in the holes ;D MR TUFF

Nice hunt and counter-marked coin :icon_thumleft: .. I got my first a couple weeks ago, was a KGII "WM"

Wow, great hunt. I love how your large cent looks so good out of the ground. The counter stamp makes it even more interesting.

HH,
Don

Possible Love Token

It could be a love token, given to a soldier to remember his love left at home. VERY NICE FIND!!!! :hello2:

I found a WW1 British Token a few weeks back.

Way to go!! :icon_thumleft:

My feelings on the LC and the bust half dime I found Friday at the same spot is that they are NOT related to the Civil war activity in this area. Both coins were found on a low wooded ridge that shows evidence of a home site (s). The CW bullets were all found the next ridge over (about a football field distance away. Unfortunately a large part of this wooded ridge is DENSELY covered in brairs, grapevines and vegetation which makes hunting most of it extremely difficult...very frustarting as I know there are more good finds to be had in all that mess.

Thanks for the link HMN -- I'm assuming that is a list of all private counterstrikes on all coins worlwide :dontknow: and not just US Large Cents.

I found my first counterstruck LC this summer -- any idea why this was done? Here's a link to mine -- it is triangular with numbers and three initials in it. Unfortunately, I guess the guy was having a bad day as it was struck at least four times. A quadruple overstrike :laughing7:

Regardless of what that stamp means that is a cool find for any collection...congrats!

Was there a George Washington Jr?

Not sure about that but, here in NYC area we call the lower level of the GW bridge -- the Martha Washington bridge :laughing9:
