My wife and I are building a new house, and a few months ago we found this old mantle and door in a abandoned old house. We tracked down the owner, who grew up in the house, and he was more than happy to let us take them. The mantle fits our fireplace perfectly, we can't wait until this old gem is installed and enjoyed! It has probably sat unused for 50 years. I have fixed a few splits and tightened it up, my wife is oiling the old crackled finish and keeping it as-is.

Seeing as it is -54C (-65F) with the wind chill factor, and I haven't been able to detect for months, this old wood is about the only cool find I am able to post these days lol. Come on spring!!

Nice save! Are you going to keep the window frames, & is that hardwood flooring I see in the last picture?

Thanks Mama bear. Yes we did 3/4 inch oak hardwood throughout the entire house except bathrooms. As for the windows, there wouldn't have been nearly enough of them, and sadly a couple of years ago someone smashed all the windows out. This left them open to the weather and wildlife. We are going to go back in there in the spring, I'm sure there are a few more goodies to find. It's too bad that animals have turned the place into a poopy mess in most of the rooms, it's pretty nasty.

They are both beautiful pieces. I love the spirit of old wood and what it brings to a home.
