The find I dug yesterday was confirmed as a Rev War Royal Artillery cartridge box strap end. Such a shame it's only half but told a rare find nonetheless. Gotta love this hobby. Expect the unexpected!

I already Bannered you HMN but this post is great, well presented and really illuminating!

Best wishes!

You are exactly correct. That's a great find, even in the condition it is in. NOBODY finds much of this anymore.

Congrats on your positive ID. Well done. HH.

Heavymetalnut- U had it Ided correctly in your first post and good research and congrats on a fantastic find. . These can be found in Don Troiani's book "Insignia of Independence "page 25 . Their function , other than being decorative ,is they were crimped over the ends of the buff leather to stop it from curling. Of an interesting note about the Royal Artillery. They took the time to make these beautiful belt tip and inscribe it and the cartridge box plate but not the buttons as the enlisted wore plain brass and officer's were brass plated gilded ones . Keep pounding that site my friend and mum's the word. Banner material ? Yup u got my vote brother. Gary

No doubt about that ID. The only question is.... if the whole cartridge box was discarded, where is the other strap tip and the box badge?
