Richmond Castle..

Took the wife out for a drive today out in the beautifull North Yorkshire Dales, were we visited Richmond Castle

The castle was originally built to subdue the unruly North of England it is one of the greatest Norman fortresses in Britain. It was constructed from 1071 onwards as part of the Norman Conquest of Saxon England as the Domesday Book of 1086 refers to 'a castlery' at Richmond in that year.

William the Conqueror had put down the 1069 rebellion at York which was followed by his "harrying of the North" - an act of ethnic cleansing which depopulated large areas for a generation or more. As a further punishment he divided up the lands of north Yorkshire among his most loyal followers. Alain Le Roux de Ponthievre of Brittany received the borough of Richmond [1] and began constructing the castle to defend against further rebellions

We then moved to Easby Abbey next to the River Swale, with it's beautifull wall paintings from the 12th century

Looks like you and the wife had a great day out Colin :thumbsup:

. I love those old buildings and especially the medieval wall paintings, they're in great shape too. Superb photos all round, but who's the grumpy looking bloke in the last pic :laughing7:

Glad you like them Sandcreek...The wife and I just joined the British Heritage Club which gives us entries to Historical places in the UK, so I will be posting more :thumbsup:

But yes those walls could tell a few tales, just on a note...Richmond Castle was never besieged

Thanks SS ! Beatiful pics and great history ! There is just so much history to see in Great Britain ! The good Lord willing I will make it there one day to see at least some of it ! Thank you again .

With the generous British Treasure Trove laws, why not?

But i assume the archies would have been all over this site at some time in the past and all the dirt and sod layed down (does look nice) is fresh stuff right?

English Heritage run the site, and most Ancient monuments in the UK, only they could give permission to do any survey in, or on Ancient sites, They can stop a Archaeological dig anytime, should they wish to do so :icon_thumleft:

Very nice pics, thanks for sharing. I think my people were still chippin tools out of rocks when that was built. But we were happy. I think the guy in the last pic is the one who tells you you can't detect there. (haha, jokin)
