Sure could be a fishing weight! If I ran a sturdy cord line through that twice and pulled it tight, it might leave an indentation from the pressure on the outside of the "sinker".

At least in my mind it works... a 50lb test ice-fishing cord for example might kinda cut into soft lead if tight enough... right?

Sure looks like a fishing weight musketball. Maybe someone decided to use it to feed people instead of killing them. ???

Cool dude! Pretty interesting find.

That lead ball is still a mystery to me too. I found one like it about a month ago in an old NC mountain town city park. Picture attached. They do a CW reenactment there every year too, so mine may have just been a newer copy? It doesn't have a hole in it, so I wouldn't think it was a fishing weight. Who knows?
Thanks for posting that.

Thanks Jim.
I guess I was just hoping it was more than a sinker. Mine is about 1/2" tall. I've never seen a split shot that big, I guess. It just looks like there is no crease on mine where the two sides were pinched together. It looks more like lead on the outside of the ball.
I found the two links attached on a CW relic site. They look like what I have. I guess that is why this is puzzling me. What makes these ones different? Are they a lot larger in size?

I'm not questioning your knowledge, believe me. I appreciate all the info you have given me on my posts. I'm just a rookie at this CW stuff, and trying to learn my way. ;D
Thanks again,

And btw... that second link looks a lot like your item... ;)

Ha... good question! And you should question me, I am by NO means an expert! I'm just trying to help. I am only basing my input on your picture which looks like it's split there down the middle and pressed together... it may be caused by something else and in fact be something else altogether! If it's material on the outside of the item then you know I'm prolly wrong... :D

Jim, for what it's worth, I agree...I too think Modern Miner's thingy is a split shot that's been tightly compressed. The links in Modern Miner's newest post show balls with mold seam lines. Whereas the photo in his first post shows what looks like a compression line. Could be due to photographic distortion, however.

As we can see, Token Finder's thingy is a little different, it's got what appears to be a uniform hole going all the way through it. How would that be made by hand out in the field of battle? Hmmm, sewing needle would be too flimsey I think. A pin from a badge would be too, I suspect. Maybe it was made with a wire? I've seen modern fishweights with holes like that, I think they're called slip shots or slip weights.

Capt., so the soldiers were net fishing when not engaged in some other activity? Very interesting. That's what is so doggone interesting about relics, they tell about the activities of their day...without speaking a word. I mean, how cool is that???!!!!! RELICS RULE.

TokenFinder,
I didn't mean to move in on your post. Sorry. It just looked like the round lead ball you found was similar to something I had found too in the past.
I started a new post for my find at:

so it doesn't interupt yours any futher.
Thanks,
MM

This is coming from a life long fisherman. I believe that round ball is a net sinker. It seems like if it were a split shot there would be flat spots on the sides where it was squeezed together. Also, it wouldn't have a large hole or the sinker would not have stayed put where it was attached. It does look quite old from the patina. I have found many a split shot on the lake shores while metal detecting swimming holes and around docks and all of the split shot have had flat spots where they were squeezed together. None looked that old either. That's just my experience though. Great find there!!!
