Went to visit my mom in Ringtown, PA and noticed an old house nearby. I first hit a 1928 Merc. and then things died down until a 1918 Merc. popped out. Got me thinking there should be some older coins and other stuff here. Kept at it and in between some old junk I got a few keepers. An old boy scout badge, an 1866 Indian Head, a very badly beatup Shield nickel (I think 1872, but need cleaning help, please!) It is a little better than the pics but not much. I also got 2 neat old Philadelphia and Reading coat buttons and some round metal object that reads "Catawissa 1857 Summit, Balto.? Any ideas on this would be appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Lead Seal. I'd say railroad seal

Nice Finds !

at the junction of the Sunbury and Erie Railway Company. The cars of the Northern Central Road, from Baltimore and Harrisburg, also are joined to the train, and proceed on to Williamsport, the terminus of the line of the Catawissa Railroad.

Great hunt out there in PA ! Nice finds , silver  P&R buttons are very cool 8) The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad (P&R) was one of the first railroads constructed in the United States. Along with the Little Schuylkill, a horse-drawn railroad in the Schuylkill River Valley, it formed the earliest components of what became the Reading Company. Primarily, the P&R was constructed to haul anthracite coal from the mines in northeastern Pennsylvania's Coal Region to Philadelphia. The original P&R mainline extended south from the mining town of Pottsville to Reading and then onward to Philadelphia, following the gently graded banks of the Schuylkill River for nearly all of the 93-mile journey. The P&R mainline had the distinction of being, upon its 1843 completion, the first double track main line in the United States. I like RR relics and have a P & R RR lock

I can see I have to get up to Berks/Schuylkill County one of these days in hopes of finding some Reading Railroad relics. With all my ancestor ties being in those two counties since the early to mid 1700s, I sure could use some history from them for my collection.

Here is an article about my Great Great Grandfather who worked for the Reading Company for nearly 54 years! (1847 - 1 Jan 1902 He was even a Choo Choo engineer for awhile running from Reading to Port Clinton.
