Detector(s) used
E-Trac w/Pro Coil,and 6x8" S.E.F,The Relic & Gold hunters DREAM...a Troy X-3 w/3 coils
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
A friend and I took a trip to an 1860's Chicago Park this morning....We Arrived about 7:30 and the Crack Heads were already out and about...I counted 7 that were still sleeping in the park just getting up.....& another 12-14 milling around the park in two's and three's..................
Me and my friend worked out some signals before hand,,,,and started to work an area being carefull to stay within about 50-75 feet from each other........Our detectors were acting erratic working so close to each other and,it was hard to concentrate on any kind of target. I felt like we were 2 caribou that were singled out by these Lyons for a feast...I lifted my left earphone so I could hear behind me,,,as I would look up in my friends direction when 2 or 3 Lyons would walk straight for,and up behind within 75 -100 foot of him........When he bent down to dig a target....I would walk toward him within 40 feet or so and loiter in an area acting interested in my detector till he was finished recovering his target, and he did the same for me..
We stood our ground as we were alert.........watching each other so as not to be supprized...Grabbing at our two foot gardining shovels when ANY group got within 15 feet of us...We had a pair of Lyons follow us,and picked up the pace walking faster, swinging faster.....And doing a Fighter Pilot manoeuvre.....the rolling Scissors.......If you watch the Military Chanel ,,,You know that we were were walking in an S & reverse S pattern so they would have to choose to follow just one of us....Then the other could be ready to defend their friends back with that 2 ' shovel....If you know what I mean.........We were tested no less that 7 times by my count,,,,and there were 2 times that 2 different groups got within 15 feet before we both turned-----shovels in hand waiting for the fight to begin.........They all seen we were not going to back down....but had kept testing us...............
After 3 1/2 hours of the toughest Detecting either of us have ever done.......We were really starting to get outnumbered......
Lyons 30.......detectorists 2................Now it was time to leave.................We made a pact when we got back to my car......
Next time we go to THIS Park....we will have to go out in a group of no less than 4......and hunt close in groups of 2....
All for 2 silver..................My Buddy got a Merc,and a rosie......and My finds are below...............................
We were both stubborn,,,,,,wanting to find seated and barbers,,,,,but got Lucky not only to find silver....But to escape with our detectors in hand,,,,,,as I am sure the Lyons could have sold them to score their drug of choice tonight......H.H. all

how sad. that's all I can say.

thats not fun detecting if you HAVE TO LOOK ALL AROUND ALL THE TIME! SOME GREAT FINDS , WTG! GLAD TO HEAR YOUR OK!

Your 2-foot shovel, with it's highly-polished blade, can be one of your best friends.

And you're right, it's no fun hunting like that. . . keep safe

(nice silver too)

Dave, that's tough... I'm sorry to hear crap like that happens. :-\

Nice finds for sure!!!

I really like those Georges!

At some point you have to ask yourself if it's really worth it.... ...and that's a shame.

I know the feeling, that's for sure... but I don't think I've ever had to do "the rolling scissors" maneuver to shake them off of my tail before. I don't think I would have stayed as long as you did. Definitely not worth it, but congrats on your finds. Amazing you could concentrate at all on those signals.

Yep the lyons are out there, last year I had a brush with one of them at an old Chicago park. Be careful and always be aware of your surroundings people!!!!

It's a shame that many of the older historic areas of some cities are now taken over by scum.

Too bad that drugs didn't kill alot quicker....

Sounds like someone went to union or the north side of douglas park. Had that sort of day in union park before. Well earned coins and good to see you didn't need to swing those shovels.

Makes me wanna sing:

"22's, 25's, 44's, 45's, Mack 11's, AK's, Takin' Mad Lives
What the f**k you gonna do in a situation
It's like you need to have steel just to feel relaxation
Tons of guns"

- Gang Starr, Tons of Guns

Sounds like you had an exciting hunt! WTG on the silver Dave!!!

I have never tried and hope I will never have to, but I'm pretty sure my shovel will take a mans head off with one chop. I sharpen it regularly, and not just to cut roots.
