If I remember correctly Robbers Roost in Utah was where Butch Cassidy hid out.

After a quick search on Google I fould this http://usa.indettaglio.it/eng/46/081/1264540.html
Yep, I found several "Robbers Roost" in the United States. Must have been a well liked name. The one I am concerned about was definitely in S. Dak. Thanks for info.

There was basically a trail a lot of robbers followed in the old west. on this trail were 3 notorious hideout areas. What was known as Robbers Roost was located in what is now Canyonland NP. A local newspaper once said"Death would be as certain and swift as if they plunged into the mouth of a volcano" about lawman entering Robbers Roost. The second hideout was in Browns Park, named for the settler Baptiste Brown. It sits on the border of Utah & Colorado neat the Wyoming border. It is near a town called Little Hole, NE of Vernal and East of Manila. This is rough Mountian area, I have been there. Manilla has a rodeo every year. The last one I have on My map is the famous Hole-In-The-Wall. You get to it thru a notch in the great red wall. No posse would venture in there. This is in Wyoming SW of Kaycee and NE of Shoshoni.
I don't know of any in SD, but Deadwood had it's own reputation. I have been there. It is now a colorfull tourest trap. Frank

Thanks for your input Frank. You are right about Deadwood, I only live 40 miles from there. On the Black Hills Forest Service map it lists a Robbers Roost in a write-up, but no mention of it's location, with the exception that it is in Custer State Park. The GF & P personnel seem to be hush hush about the area. Metal detectors are not allowed in the State Park, but I thought it would be a fun time to just explore the sight, grab a couple pics, and imagine what had went on there. I guess I am just "goofy" like that. You have a good day.

I have hiked thru the Black Hills several years ago. Come to think about it there is a town in the Black Hills park area. Perhaps that was the Robbers Roost of SD. The Black Hills is very colorfull to hike thru and gold has been found there in the past. I couldn't use my detector there, but I was sure looking for it. Frank

Hey Frank, I've been able to find little info about this particular spot in Browns park. If you found any resources concerning this, could you point me in their direction? Thanks. Ryan

Ryan, always happy to help a fellow TH. I am 75 now, so I don't have time to find it all. lol It's been years since I have been to that area but I have marked the outlaw trails on my map. Here's my best description. It just about sits on the Utah / Colorado border where the river crosses below the Wyoming border. Browns Park was founded by Baptiste Brown. It is an isolated valley. It was a fur trading center in the 1830's. Kit Carson worked there as a hunter. There were plenty of robberies around there. Castle Gap, April 21, 1897 Bank robery, Parachute, July 7, 1904 Train robbery, Tipton, August 29, 1900 train robbery. I have not research these robberies, so I have no further info on them, just the listings. Hope this gets you going in the right direction, Frank
