The weather in Northern Michigan is finally warming up and the ground is nearly "unfrozen". This would be the first dig of the year and I would be heading out with a new metal-detectionist buddy.
This last year I received a friend request (Facebook) from a local metal detectionist and, after a few messages, we finally coordinated a joint venture. He took us to some private land and we searched the old farm, fields and orchard digging up a number of pennies, bullets, trinkets and trash. I was just happy to be out but we were hoping to kick the year off with something better than a lost silver-plated fork from the 1970s. Now normally I would not take a new dirt-digger friend to my favorite spots but I could tell from the start he was the kind of guy I would dig with again. We packed up the Volvo and headed to the absolute best fur trade spot I have ever found.
The ground was still frozen so the search efforts were going a tad slow......just as I am about to propose a move to a new spot when Bryan (new digging friend) unearths a freaking TRADE AXE!! It was in amazing condition and, post tank cleaning, will be worthy of T-Net post. I am extremely happy for him. A handful of minutes later he yanks out a brass trade ring?! Its not bent or damaged and I am still happy for him. THEN a short while later he plucks a 1958-O Seated Liberty half dime in nearly perfect condition. OK at this point I am still happy for him but as he was rolling in gift-from-the-fur-trade-gods my pockets were filled with trash. I was due for something (anything)...then I hear a crisp, clear tone 10 inches down.
I made a huge plug and carefully checked the hole with the pinpointer after each layer of soil was removed. Near the one foot mark I finally see a flash of silver and out pops this silver bracelet shining in the midday sunshine. On one end I see the "RC" and the other is shaped like a hawk with a "MONTREAL" stamp present. After seeing "GUY TOKENS" find from this last year I knew exactly what this was and could not be happier! Enjoy all
